Heavenly nausea

they haven't been living by bread alone
they've gobbled up gobbled up the sky
sky all painted with ceilings
sky all scribbled with idols
peopled with vampires in ceremonial garb
sky covered in lines for slogans
sky criss-cross like a cage
arrogant sky of the empty-headed
guts splitting
the air fouled
nauseous
stuffed sick on sky
vomiting stars like dross
the contents of flying saucers
guzzled light

the dark side of the universe
is eating away this tender earth

There's life on other planets
and visitors might have flown our way
but they weren't allowed in
by the customsmen and frontier guards
posted at the borders
of our solar system

perhaps the customsmen and frontier guards
are keeping them out
in case they smuggle in
their deepest internal secrets
and in case they stay with us
not because it's better down here
but because we mightn't let them go

but first and foremost
our customsmen and frontier guards won't let them in
and why they won't let them in
doesn't even matter that much
what really matters is
that out on the borders of the solar system

they've even got
our people there

Blind

Breughel's blind
tumble after each other into the pit
Brezhnev's blind
stop themselves toppling
by standing still
and clutching at each other
Stalin's blind
dig each other the pit
Lenin's blind
stand in line
to see him

The paper lie
is yellowing with time

Gunbarrels
coshes
prison bars
have branded on it
their black shadows

And so from the darkest
jungles of history
forming in broad daylight
appears a paper tiger -
a maneater
